Abstract:
From the perspective of the landscape architecture and the way of research by design, the program analyzes and researches the development, current situation and regeneration of the urban public spaces in Beijing old city. Based on field research and interaction with the inhabitants, the program studied the cases of public space strategies trying to explore the effective landscape renewal approach for urban public spaces. The following strategies are discussed in detail: Firstly, adding and promoting the Micro Public Spaces (MPS) in HUTONG areas; Secondly, transforming the Bus/Railway station plots into landscape infrastructure with multi-function; Thirdly, encouraging certain Privately Owned Public Spaces (POPS) to be open all day or interval; Last, reconstructing the network and system of the public spaces in Beijing old city. The means of design research are varied, including residents’ interviews, interactive research, literature research, program display and art devices, etc. With the help of them, the program attempts to explore a public space renewal model in the high density build urban area.
