Abstract:
A large number of private gardens were constructed in Beijing in history. Despite restrictions in various natural conditions, such as the climate, geography, soil, water sources and local products, and multiple humanistic conditions, the designers suited their measures to local conditions, solved all kinds of problems with corresponding means, to create unique garden styles and leave behind valuable experiences. Based on textual research of historical materials and case surveying, the author analyzes the gardening skills of suitability of private gardens in Beijing, including grey walls and colored paintings in most buildings, north lake stones and blue stones of rockeries, water saving measures, and alternative modes of plant landscape of southern gardens. The wisdom contained in private gardens is worthy of reference today.
