Abstract:
The renovation of the east part of Yu Garden in Shanghai is an essential case in Chen Congzhou’s garden preservation and restoration practices. This research attempts to discuss the artistic conception of Chen Congzhou’ s renovation of the east part of Yu Garden from the three aspects of “site preservation”, “renovation” and “artistic conception”, and explicitly analyzes Chen Congzhou’s preservation principle that “physical quality resides in actuality”, the gardening conception of “continuation or re-creation of old paintings”, and the cultural self-confidence of “landscapes flowing under my brush”. The research believes that, Chen Congzhou’s renovation of the east part of Yu Garden area provides a significant historical heritage premise and cultural spatial foundation for the contemporary existence of “Yu Garden” area in Shanghai, and also initiates the urban renewal and attribute transformation of the “Yu Garden” area in Shanghai.
