Bonsai and Square Pond: Indian Elements in Southeast Asian Gardens

This paper aims to demonstrate the influence of Indian civilization on Southeast Asian gardens. By analyzing two typical garden elements in Southeast Asian gardens : Bonsai and square, this paper presents that both elements are not clumsy imitation of Chinese and European gardens as presumed in previous studies, but elements either originated from Indian gardens or greatly influenced by Indian civilization with profound philosophical and theological symbolization.
