Abstract:
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Beaux-arts planning, popular in the United States, left great impacts on China’s campus planning and city planning. Lingnan University, a former Christian college solely established by Americans, was influenced to some extent by the United States in its layout and architectural and landscape design in campus construction. At present, studies of Lingnan University mainly focus on its architecture, with little research on the campus planning and environment. Through archival research, situation analysis and form analysis, this paper explores the source of the planning thought, the process of the planning evolution and the landing of the planning in Lingnan University. The research will promote a more comprehensive understanding of Lingnan University and provide important references for the conservation of the historical architecture and landscape of Sun Yat-sen University. It may also serve as a significant case for the study of the influences of Beaux-arts planning on city planning in modern China.
